Awareness isn’t just paying attention. Alignment isn’t about getting the pose “right.” Anatomy isn’t just for textbooks. The practices of yoga open a doorway into both gross and subtle experiences of our mind, body, and vitality. We’ll begin with tools that create the “thing” that is awareness deeper than attention. Using breathing practices and the bandhas, you’ll experience the shift of mind from thought to presence. Then we’ll layer in the power of alignment using the teachings of reciprocal muscle inhibition. Yoga poses become alive conversations between the innate intelligence of the body and the one who is dwelling in it. You’ll leave with a fresh relationship to anatomy in action and a deep appreciation for the wisdom of the body that’s constantly working on your behalf (even when you don’t know where your teres minor is or what your longus coli does!).
Expect this to be a combination of pranayama and mindfulness tools (to put your brain in its learnable state) and the linear teachings of anatomy and asana. You will have a very alive relationship to your body’s musculoskeletal system and you will understand the key muscles that create balance and vitality in yoga poses. This workshop will focus on the upper body and the art of wise back bending.
