Many of us have been practicing yoga for decades. While our lives are more contented, our relationships more harmonious, and our hearts more loving, sometimes our hips are starting to hurt, creak, or “feel different”. Some of us were recommended to yoga practices in more recent years, perhaps due to hip or lower back pain.
This session will provide a structural and energetic understanding of the tiny universes inside your hip sockets; a universe deserving of more inner space and consideration than many of us have realized. For each time we enjoy a standing pose or a glide through from virabhadrasana two (warrior 2) to adho mukha svanasana (downward facing dog), our hip joints are asked to support our efforts, our joy, our strength, and our stamina. Yet, if the interior of your hip capsule is consistently mis-aligned in these practices, that tiny universe is moving out of balance.
This session will explore how such imbalances are intertwined in conversations between specific muscles as well as the dynamics of yogic breathing and bandhas (there are times not to use ujjayii breathing or mula bandha!). We’ll use some assessment techniques include therabands and myofacial release tools. Then we’ll venture into the universes inside your hip sockets where joy can be remembered and sustained. Please bring a yoga strap and two blocks to this session. The other props will be supplied.
This session will also provide insight into hip replacements, preventative practices, pre-op or post-op practices, and wisdom yoga teachers need to help their students’ hips maintain healthy tiny universes!
Please bring a mat, 2 blocks and a strap.
